The static population is about 1800. Gaelic is still spoken by most native islanders (all can speak fluent English.) The population is mainly Presbyterian with Sunday observance a part of the unique culture. Most shops, petrol stations and visitor attractions are closed on Sundays.  "Out of phase" or "Precenting" Gaelic psalm singing is a feature of Gaelic Services in most island Presbyterian churches. The unique sound has a special place in the hearts of most native islanders, whatever their religious persuasion.

Harris, in common with all of the Hebrides, has a rich tradition of Gaelic song and story telling. Schools in Harris have a well deserved reputation of excellence in both singing and instrument playing under the tuition of Mr Iain MacIver and Mrs Christine Hurley. Don't miss an opportunity to hear them, their talent, discipline and enthusiasm is outstanding. Look out for ‘gigs' with some of the more established Gaelic singers as well and maybe a CD to take home as a reminder of your Harris holiday.

Road signs are in Gaelic which can occasionally cause confusion but really it is almost impossible to get lost here.

Weather in the Hebrides can be 4 seasons in a day or it can be 6 weeks of sunshine as in May / June 2008. Think about the old adage "there's no such thing as bad weather just the wrong clothes" Be prepared for changeable weather and take wet weather gear and a few changes, especially footwear. Keep an eye on the weather forecasts and organise indoor activities accordingly. Here at Rodel we provide daily printouts of the weather forecasts for the week ahead to let you plan your activities.
